Recently I had a talk with an English teacher who was laid off. Except for teaching, he had no idea how he could make money. I summarized our talk and turned it into tips.

Proofreading texts

You can proofread texts that are in languages you know well. There are some websites that could help you—for example, and Languagetool (there are 30 languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese and others).

Sell your lesson plans or resources 

Clearly, you have composed many lesson plans and resources. Why not to sell them? You could sell them on Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) or on your website. 

Conduct webinars and sell the recordings

I bet you know a lot! Another way of earning some money is to conduct webinars with useful tips. You could have free Live streams. Yet, if people cannot come, they can buy records. Or if you would like to, you can also charge for your Lives.

Transcribe audio to text

There are different kinds of dictations to use during lessons. One of them is when you ask your learners to write everything down that they hear on audio you play — word by word. Have you ever practiced this kind of dictation?

It is a very useful exercise to practice listening skills. You can learn more from the video that I recorded. 

You can earn money by transcribing audios (interviews, discussions, debates, etc.) to texts.

Usually, they offer 10-22 US$ for 1 hour of recording. There are many online companies that offer such kinds of jobs. Just google “Transcribe audio to texts online.”

Writing texts for others

If you like writing, I think it is a great way to earn money.

This is what I also do. For example, I have a project with an online language school – Verbal Bridges. I write blog posts for them in English, German, and Spanish. 

Or you could be a ghostwriter.

A ghostwriter is a person who writes blog posts (or other texts) for someone. Let’s call that someone Jane Doe. You write for Jane Doe on a regular basis. Jane Doe pays you. As you are a ghostwriter, your name is not published. Instead, your blog posts are under the name of Jane Doe.
