Blogging During The Blackouts In Ukraine, 2024

Yes, living in a country where there is war is challenging.

I thought that things could not get any worse. Yet, they have gotten worse – constant blackouts. What is more, it is +38 C (100.4 F) in the shade.

Lately, we have only 2-4 hours of electricity a day.

  • AC doesn’t work;
  • the refrigerator doesn’t work (the food gets spoiled quickly);

When there is no electricity

  • I cannot cook anything (there is no gas in our building);
  • The coffee machine doesn’t work (so, I make a cup of coffee when there is electricity and our it into my thermos flask to drink in the morning);
  • I cannot use my PC;
  • the elevator doesn’t work (I cannot imagine what my neighbors feel who live on the 24th floor);

There are constant blackouts because russians are constantly bombing power stations in Ukraine.

Nevertheless, I do my best to keep blogging.

I try to think outside of the box and find some workarounds.

Writing texts

You will not believe it, but I started writing by hand a lot more. I am writing this text by hand at a cozy restaurant because they have an industrial generator. Thus, there is electricity. Therefore, the AC is working now and they can cook some main dishes. And the bonus—they have some ice! Finding ice is hard!

The new luxury is electricity.

Sometimes I regret having bought a PC with a huge screen and a mechanical keyboard. Now, I understand that having a laptop is much more convenient because you don’t have to have it constantly plugged into a socket.

After writing a text by hand, I type it on my tablet or mobile phone.

May, 2024.

I connect my tablet or phone to my mechanical keyboard (Keychron K3 84). By the way, this keyboard can be changed from a power bank. Then, I created a Word document on Google Drive and changed the settings to “available offline.” It allows me to work with the document when there is no electricity and internet, too.

If the text is too long or too complicated, I print it out once there is electricity.

If I am not sure of the best sequence of paragraphs, I cut them out and shuffle them. It helps me understand the best sequence of paragraphs.

By the way, I have a blog post (in English, Spanish, and German) with tips on editing texts – “10 tips and tricks for text editing.”

When the sun goes down

Once it is dark indoors, I turn on as many lamps and strings of lights as possible. Usually, I use two desk lamps, one string of lights in the green vase, and two power banks to connect all my devices.

Sometimes I feel as blind as a bat when it is dark, so my desk looks like a Christmas tree in the evenings.

Blogging during the blackouts and extreme heat without an AC sometimes feels like hell. But I love blogging. I love that you read my blog posts and it makes me happy.

The temperature in winter here may be -25 C (-13 F) and there might be no heating. I hope to keep blogging during the cold.

I will do my best to keep this blog alive.
